In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais, several Republican states felt emboldened to carve up their majority-black congressional districts that tend to elect Democrats, and they raced to create new maps to benefit the GOP in the House of Representatives. Midterm elections usually go poorly for the party in power, and with many political operatives predicting that Republicans will lose their razor-thin majority in Congress’ lower chamber this fall, the GOP is scrambling to get as many seats as it can.
