What places have fallen off the most in terms of cultural relevance?

1889 Paris Worlds Fair, 1891 Prague, 1893 Chicago, 1897 Brussels, 1900 Paris... 1904 St. Louis!
St. Louis, Missouri used to have so much more cultural sway as the "Gateway to the West" in the late 19th century/early 20th century. It also still lingers large in the imagination around the Prohibition-era US.
Türkiye:
There used to be so many references to Ottoman and Turkish culture during and before the early 20th century. Everything from Turkish delight, Turkish March (Alla Turca), Fez hats, Turkish Orientalism in early cinema, etc. Now Türkiye no longer holds much interest in Western culture.
Do you have any more examples of places that were one much more culturally important/relevant than they are now?
